Originally Fyvie was a fortified Tower, of the Preston Family which transferred to the Meldrum family through marriage. It was the Meldrum's who enlarged the building into a Castle of a more impressive size, with a long main block/hall between two crenelated towers. Though by the end of the 16th century it was beginning to show itself a more crumbling ruin, it was sold by the family of Meldrum to Alexander Seton, son of George, 7th Lord Seton, who at the time was Lord Urquhart, an Extra-Ordinary in the Court of Session. Upon receipt of the Castle, he immediately added the twin-towered entrance, reworked the turrets into conical-capped designs, re-roofed the whole of the structure, which gave it the appearance which is seen to this day. Not only did he embelish the entire Castle with heraldic panels and elaborate carvings, but the central circular staircase was his masterpiece.
