The estate of Winton was
confirmed to Philip de Seton by a Royal Charter
dated 1169. His eldest son Alexander
inherited the estate and the lands of Winton were passed to his
son, Bertram. From Bertram de Seton, the
families of Winton, Edmonstone and Johnstone
descend. After the male-line of the Seton's
failed, the heiress Margaret Seton, daughter of
Alexander, the eldest surviving son of the Keeper
of Berwick, married Alan de Winton her lineal
cousin and their eldest son William retained the
name of Seton and became 1st Lord Seton, Winton
and Winchburgh.
