Earl of
Dunfermline, was the 4th son of George, the 7th
Lord Seton, and godchild of Queen Mary "of Scots".
From her he received the lands of Pluscarden.
His father sent him to Rome, and he studied for
some time in the Jesuits’ College. At the
overthrow of the Roman Catholic Church in Scotland
he abandoned his pursuits, and studied civil and
canon law. He passed as an advocate before
James VI at Holyrood in 1577, created a Lord of
Session in 1586 and became Lord Urquhart, later
Lord Fyvie. James VI made him Chancellor of
Scotland, and Earl of Dunfermline, 1605.
